Annual bioarchaeological field school

Through partnership with the Anthropocene Research Center, Millsaps College, and Culver-Stockton College, the Asylum Hill Project offers an annual bioarchaeological field school at the site. For five weeks each summer, students from across the country receive intensive education in excavation and lab work methods, as well as learning about the history and significance of the site. The Asylum Hill Project archaeological staff are dedicated to training the next generation of archaeologists, bioarchaeologists, and forensic anthropologists.

UMMC School of Dentistry

Since 2024, students in UMMC’s Dental Hygiene program have been contributing to the Asylum Hill Project while honing their knowledge of dental anatomy. Under the direction of Dr. Beckie Barry, professor of dental anatomy, and the archaeological staff, the students have worked on carefully recording dental inventories and dental traits that may ultimately assist staff in identifying some of the individuals excavated from the cemetery.
